Steve Bannon, a former strategist to American President Donald Trump, has been charged with a new crime in New York and is scheduled to surrender on Thursday, according to The Washington Post.
Late on Tuesday, Bannon gave a statement to the media in which he vowed to fight the "false charges," which he alleged were politically motivated. The indictment is anticipated to "match features" of earlier federal accusations brought against Bannon, according to the Washington Post, which said he had defrauded thousands of individuals into giving money they were told would be used to erect Trump's promised wall along the US-Mexico border.
In January 2021, during his closing hours in office, Trump absolved Bannon of the federal charges.
Bannon reiterated claims that authorities have systematically targeted the former Republican president and his friends, saying in the statement, "They are coming after all of us, not just President Trump and myself."Bannon, who is generally credited with directing the former president's victorious 2016 campaign but acrimoniously quit his job as White House adviser only months after Trump took office, continued, "I am never going to stop fighting."
In actuality, I haven't started fighting yet. They'll need to murder me first.
Following Bannon's conviction in July on contempt of congress charges coming from his refusal to cooperate with a subpoena from a congressional commission looking into the incident that occurred on January 6, 2021, at the US Capitol building in Washington, DC, comes the most recent indictment.Federal prosecutors had earlier claimed that Bannon had raised $25 million from donations for his "We Build the Wall" campaign but had instead used at least $1 million for his own benefit.
His expertly built character as a populist champion and firebrand was undermined by his arrest in August 2020 on a $35 million boat of 46 meters (150 feet) in length off the coast of the US state of Connecticut.Bannon received a pardon, but two other men eventually admitted to taking part in the plan and entered guilty pleas.
Presidential pardons solely relate to federal charges and have no bearing on state-level criminal investigations.
Since Trump granted the pardon, the Manhattan District Attorney's office has begun investigating Bannon's case, according to The Washington Post.As part of its ongoing investigation into possible illegal asset value manipulation, the office is also looking into Trump and his company.
The former president is currently under investigation for a number of things. The Department of Justice is looking into the removal and storage of sensitive papers from the White House to Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
A criminal investigation into Trump's alleged efforts to influence an election official to rig the state vote count after the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to Democrat Joe Biden, is also being conducted by Georgia prosecutors.
