Federal prosecutors have accused scores of others of trying to intimidate and silence dissidents inside the United States, with some even allegedly running an "undeclared police station" in New York City. The FBI has detained two alleged Chinese agents.

According to John Marzulli, a spokesman for the US Attorney in the Eastern District of New York, two people connected to an illegal police operation in Chinatown were detained on Monday and are anticipated to show up in federal court in New York on Monday.

In Manhattan, the accused reportedly ran an "undeclared police station". Since a search warrant was carried out there at the peak of last year, it has been shut down, the official said.

The People's Republic of China's national police are accused by the Justice Department of harassing Chinese citizens living in the US who are critical of the Chinese government. 34 personnel have been charged.

According to the Justice Department, all 34 defendants are still at large and are thought to reside in China. The officers were a part of a campaign by the Chinese government known as the "912 Special Project Working Group" to change how the People's Republic of China, or PRC, is perceived around the world.

According to the Justice Department, the agents allegedly posted on social media in support of the PRC and in criticism of their "perceived adversaries," which included the US and Chinese pro-democracy activists abroad.

The Chinese Ministry of Public Security, or MPS, allegedly gave the operatives instructions to set up and maintain accounts that appeared to be managed by Americans. Prosecutors claim that the US foreign policy, Hong Kong's human rights problems, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Covid-19, and the racial justice demonstrations following George Floyd's death are among the subjects covered by their propaganda machine.

The Justice Department claimed that agents also published videos and articles, some of which contained explicit death threats, that were directed at Chinese pro-democracy activists in the US. Additionally, it is claimed that the agents threatened individuals to coerce them into forgoing pro-democracy demonstrations within the United States.
