Pope Francis has spoken out frequently about the growing use of artificial intelligence technologies, praising their capacity to advance the common good while issuing warnings against immoral and reckless use of AI. The Pontiff brought up the subject on Monday at the Minerva Dialogues, a prestigious yearly conference for tech professionals and engineers.
Pope Francis had the Minerva Dialogues on his calendar for a while, but his talk on artificial intelligence coincidentally took place after AI-generated images of the Pontiff sporting a puffy white coat went viral over the weekend. The photographs were sufficiently lifelike to fool many people, sparking a buzz on social media. Particularly impressive details included the way the coat was lit and how his zucchetto rested on his head.
While the Pope avoided mentioning the photographs in his speech to the assembled IT professionals and Church representatives, his discussion on the wise application of AI technology was relevant. In the areas of medical, engineering, and communications, according to Pope Francis, these new technologies have been "immensely beneficial" to humanity. He expressed the hope that this benefit might also extend to "religious principles." He stated:
"I am certain that conversation between believers and nonbelievers on basic issues of ethics, science, and the arts, as well as the pursuit of life's purpose, is a path to peace and to integral human growth."
According to Pope Francis, artificial intelligence has the "potential to positively contribute to the future of humanity."
He nevertheless emphasized that the creation of such technologies should be done with the utmost caution and consideration for morality and responsibility. Developers should "respect such ideals as inclusivity, transparency, security, equity, privacy, and reliability," he said.
"I would thus urge you, in your considerations, to make the intrinsic dignity of every man and woman the primary criterion in evaluating emerging technologies; these will prove ethically sound to the extent that they aid in respecting that dignity and increase its expression at every level of human life."
