According to the Chicago Tribune, R. Kelly was found guilty on several counts of child pornography at a federal trial in Chicago but was cleared on other charges.
At his 2008 trial, which resulted from a 2002 state case, Kelly was found guilty on three of four child pornography counts and exonerated on allegations that he plotted to obstruct justice.
On three of the five counts of luring a juvenile into illicit sexual behavior, he was also found guilty.Kelly's lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, claimed that her client felt "relieved" that this case was finally finished and believed that the prosecution had overstated their case against him. Bonjean stated that she is thinking about appealing.
After the verdict, Bonjean said outside court, "There was a mixed verdict, but we won more counts than we lost." "Would this jury care enough to take into account the evidence on the remaining counts if they found him guilty on the first three counts? And they provided evidence that they did. Their work was completed. Each count was examined separately.
After hearing three weeks' worth of testimony, including from one woman who claimed anonymously that Kelly had sexually assaulted her and recorded their encounters when she was as young as 14, the jury deliberated for approximately 10 hours.
The woman was one of five kids that Kelly allegedly sexually assaulted by creating obscene recordings with four of them in the late 1990s, according to the prosecution.
Derrel McDavid and Milton Brown, two former associates who were accused of being Kelly's co-defendants, were cleared of all counts.
Kelly's former business manager and accountant, McDavid, was accused with receiving child pornography, conspiring to obtain it, and conspiring to obstruct justice. Former Kelly assistant Brown was accused of plotting to get child porn. Both made a not guilty plea.In a statement to CNN, McDavid's attorneys Vadim Glozman and Beau Brindley hailed the conviction.
"What the jury determined was what we already knew. A case that ought to have never been brought by the government was brought. It was founded on the testimony of known liars, the lawyers claimed. "We brought them to the jury's attention, and the jury came to the appropriate conclusion."
Attorneys for Kelly and Brown have been contacted by CNN for comment.A victim spoke about being sexually abused.
Under the alias Jane, a 37-year-old woman who was a witness in the case stated that Kelly started having sex with her when she was 14 and they started having sexual relations when she was 15. Before she turned 18, they had sex "hundreds" of times, according to her.Jane claimed to have met Kelly through her aunt Sparkle, who was romantically involved with R. Kelly and worked with him. When Jane first met the singer, she was 12 or 13.
At the time, Jane performed all over the world with a Christian hip-hop ensemble comprised of her cousins. In order to safeguard her identity, prosecutors asked her not to mention the organisation.
Jane claimed she started spending more time with Kelly and Sparkle soon after they first met. She would converse with Kelly about basketball and music while she watched Kelly and Sparkle record music. Jane stated that she was 13 years old when Sparkle advised her to ask Kelly to be more involved in her life.
According to Jane's testimony, when Kelly became her godfather, her parents felt at ease allowing her to spend the night or even the weekend at his house without her parents or aunt being present.
Jane testified, "They would very much drop me off and then leave."Jane claimed that she started seeing Kelly when she was 14 and that she lost her virginity to him when she was 15.
Jane stated that she disputed the relationship when Kelly was accused of having a sexual contact with her in April 2000, when Kelly was 15 years old, and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services started looking into the claim. She further stated that she later told detectives with the Chicago police that she and Kelly had no sexual relations.
When news broke in 2002 that a tape existed that depicted the duo engaging in sex acts, Jane, her parents, and Kelly got together for a meeting. Kelly allegedly told them he was having a sexual relationship with their daughter, according to the woman.
In 2002, a grand jury subpoenaed Jane and her father to testify. Jane claimed that Kelly and she spoke about "loyalty" and "denying our connection and the sex tape" before Jane appeared before the grand jury.
When Jane denied having a sexual relationship with the artist and taking part in sex tapes with him in 2002, she testified that she had lied to a grand jury.
