The 2015 Iran nuclear deal was discussed during a meeting between the presidents of the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, the White House reported on Sunday.
The need to boost support for allies in the Middle East region, as well as collaborative efforts to discourage and restrain Iran's destabilizing regional activities, were also topics of discussion, according to the White House's account of the call between the four. The conversation between US Vice President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Middle Eastern segment was not further discussed.
Last week, it was announced by the European Union and the US that they were examining Iran's answer to what the EU has dubbed its "final" proposal to resurrect the agreement, under which Tehran restricted its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
Failure in the nuclear talks could increase the likelihood of a regional conflict, with Israel threatening military action against Iran if diplomacy is unable to stop Tehran from acquiring the means to produce nuclear weapons.
Iran, which has long denied having such aspirations, has threatened any Israeli attack with a "crushing" retaliation. When then-US President Donald Trump pulled out of the nuclear agreement negotiated before he assumed office because he believed it was too lenient toward Iran, the US reinstituted harsh sanctions, which led Iran to start exceeding its uranium enrichment restrictions.
The EU's proposal, according to people with knowledge of it, calls for the lifting of sanctions against 150 economic institutions and 17 Iranian banks the day after a new agreement is signed. It also declares that Tehran will start reversing the actions it did to improve its nuclear technology, which are currently outside the bounds of what the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, and the deal's initial signatories consider to be acceptable.
The amount of enriched uranium in Iran's stockpile has increased from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action's 3.67 percent cap to 60 percent enrichment, the highest level ever (JCPOA). To create a nuclear bomb, enrichment at 90% is required.Iran will be able to export 50 million barrels of oil per day within 120 days of the deal's signing. The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, added that the agreement also calls for the release of $7 billion in Iranian cash that are currently being held in South Korea.
The sources claim that if the US withdraws from the nuclear agreement once more, as it did in 2018 under the Trump administration, it will be fined.
