London (AP) — Prince Charles of Britain is under increased scrutiny for his charitable endeavors after a newspaper revealed that one of his groups had accepted a $1,2 million payment from Osama bin Laden's family.According to The Sunday Times, Bakr bin Laden, the patriarch of the big and prosperous Saudi family, and his brother Shafiq donated the funds to the Prince of Wales's Charitable Fund in 2013. The former al-Qaida leader, who was slain by American special forces in Pakistan in 2011, had two half-brothers who are also living.

According to the publication, the heir to the throne had been advised not to accept the gift.Although they denied it, Charles' Clarence House staff acknowledged the donation. It stated that the charity's trustees, not the prince, made the choice to accept the funds and that "thorough due diligence was conducted in accepting this donation."The donation was approved "wholly" at the time by the five trustees, according to the fund's chairman, Ian Cheshire, and "any attempt to indicate otherwise is deceptive and false."

The Prince of Wales's Charitable Fund, which awards grants to a wide range of initiatives in Britain and around the globe, was established in 1979 with the mission of "transforming lives and building sustainable communities."

Concerning how his charities were run, Charles, 73, has been the target of numerous accusations. The former prime minister of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, reportedly gave him bags of cash containing $3 million last month, according to a report in The Sunday Times.

Police in London are presently looking into a further accusation that members of the Prince's Foundation, one of the prince's other organizations, attempted to help a Saudi millionaire obtain honors and citizenship in exchange for money. According to Clarence House, Charles was unaware of any such offer.
