Samuel L. Jackson has a full schedule ahead of him in the MCU, as the star in Disney+'s Secret Invasion and as a member of The Marvels. Jackson's portrayal of Nick Fury has been ever-present in the comic book narrative since Iron Man kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2008, but it has taken until now to become a pivotal character. While it was originally thought that Secret Invasion will premiere on Disney+ this year, Jackson's most recent report on filming suggests that the show will not premiere until early 2023. That timeframe may also explain why Marvel Studios and Disney decided to release Quantumania and The Marvels at different times.
Secret Invasion will be the first MCU film to be set in part during the Blip, when half of the planet was dusted, including Fury. There has been much conjecture about how this will affect Fury's appearance in the series, including whether Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) will take on Fury's shape for the majority of the plot, as we know he did in Spider-Man: Far From Home. It's also being speculated that the series will explain why Fury was off-world in Tom Holland's second Spider-Man film's post-credit credit scene, and that this will lead straight into The Marvels.
During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Jackson was able to provide a brief update, and it appears like filming on both projects is still ongoing. After appearing on Jimmy Kimmel's show and pretending surprised to learn that he would be starring in a Disney+ series, Jackson said:
"No. I'm not finished yet. At some point in August, I'll be returning to London. But I got to do some work for The Marvels, and then I got to do some work for Secret Invasion."While Samuel L. Jackson has stated that he will be back in front of the camera for both of his future films in a few months, it is likely that his return to London will be for reshoots. While it has not been verified that the stories of Secret Invasion and The Marvels are connected, there are several strands that connect the two films, including The Marvels' delayed release date. The actual calendar for both movies and series to make their debuts has always been something that is plotted as far in advance as the plots, thanks to many ties between various Marvel Studios offerings. However, due to Covid's frequent delays and the ongoing impact on some productions, the Marvel Studios slate has had to be adjusted. Secret Invasion will have an impact on The Marvels, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has connections to the multiverse and Loki, but no upcoming projects. Due to the fact that Secret Invasion is unlikely to arrive before February or March 2023, The Marvels' current release date of July 2023 is a far better fit than its earlier March release.
