Forrest Gump is Tom Hanks’ favorite film. The Oscar victory against Pulp Fiction was well-deserved.

Tom Hanks has been a part of some of the finest films of all time for over four decades, but his most well-known film is perhaps the 1994 comedy-drama Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump is a film directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on Winston Groom's novel of the same name. It tells the story of a slow-witted but kindhearted man who watches and unknowingly impacts several pivotal historical events in the United States during the twentieth century. Forrest Gump was a critical and commercial success, grossing approximately $700 million worldwide. The film also took home six Academy Awards that year, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor.Despite its enduring popularity, many fans and critics believe Forrest Gump was not the finest film of 1994. Pulp Fiction or The Shawshank Redemption both have such title. According to today's standards, Forrest Gump's legacy has been called into doubt, but Tom Hanks believes otherwise. Hanks defended Forrest Gump against critics in a recent interview with The New York Times, arguing that film was more than just a "boomer nostalgia-fest."

"The issue with Forrest Gump is that it was a billion-dollar success. Bob and I would have been geniuses if we had just made a successful film. But we were wicked geniuses because we made a hugely successful film. Is it a terrible thing to have this problem? No, but there are books on the best movies of all time, and Forrest Gump isn't included because, oh, it's a mushy nostalgia fest. Every year, an essay is published titled "The Movie That Should Have Won Best Picture," and the winner is invariably "Pulp Fiction." Without a doubt, Pulp Fiction is a classic. Look, I don't know, but there's a scene in Forrest Gump where Gary Sinise, who plays Lieutenant Dan, and his Asian wife walk up to our house on the day Forrest and Jenny get married, and it's undeniably heartbreaking humanity."Tom Hanks appears to believe that Forrest Gump's box office success and overall popularity are the reasons why people nowadays look past it. Pulp Fiction, directed by Quentin Tarantino, was favorably welcomed by both critics and fans, winning the Palme d'Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. Hanks acknowledges that Pulp Fiction is a "masterpiece," but he understands why it lost to Forrest Gump: it didn't connect with the audience sufficiently, and it isn't the fault of the filmmakers. The non-linear storyline, violent violence, profanity, and drug usage in Pulp Fiction were issues that the audience was unfamiliar with at the time. Then there's Tarantino's penchant for using the N-word in his films. When you compare that to Forrest Gump's innumerable poignant moments, it's apparent which film an ordinary moviegoer or Academy voter will favor. Lieutenant Dan's magical legs sequence, according to Hanks, is proof enough of why Forrest Gump is still adored around the world. A Bollywood version of the film, Lal Singh Chaddha, is also in the works, with Aamir Khan playing the eponymous role.

However, both Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump will go down in history as two of the best films of all time, with varied interpretations by different audiences. It has no bearing on whether one is better or worse than the other. And, if it's any consolation, the Academy still favors popular and melodramatic crowd-pleasers three decades after Forrest Gump's "undeserving" Best Picture win. A few recent examples include Green Book and The Shape of Water.

Colonel Tom Parker will be Tom Hanks' next role in Elvis, which will be released on June 24, 2022. For Here, Hanks is reconnecting with the Forrest Gump crew. Here, an adaptation of Richard McGuire's graphic novel of the same name, is directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Eric Roth. The film stars Robin Wright and is regarded as a huge epic set spanning thousands of years.
