Rowan Atkinson, who starred in the Mr. Bean franchise as a "self-centered" nuisance, thinks his new character is "sweeter." While Atkinson hasn't portrayed Mr. Bean in a long time, fans may catch him in his most recent project, Man vs. Bee, on Netflix. The series, which will premiere on Netflix on June 24, features Atkinson as a mansion housesitter who tries to avoid inflicting irreparable damage while battling an elusive bee in the house.Of course, Man vs. Bee is a slapstick comedy series, and it has a lot in common with Mr. Bean, but the characters of Atkinson are quite different. According to Deadline, Atkinson depicts Mr. Bean as a "self-centered, narcissistic anarchist" and a "nine-year-old stuck in a man's body" in a recent interview with the New York Times. The actor went on to say that his Man vs. Bee character, Trevor, is a much nicer person who is probably easier to relate to
"Trevor is unique. I hope he's a much better, sweeter, and more regular guy now — and that was really our goal… He appears to be a lovely, well-intentioned, wonderfully brilliant man, but he has flaws and weak points, one of which is his obsessiveness."
Trevor's obsession in this case is to stop the bee that has infested the mansion he was paid to look after. Jing Lusi, Claudie Blakley, Tom Basden, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Greg McHugh, India Fowler, and Tina Fey feature in the new series, which was co-created by Atkinson and William Davies. On June 24, Man vs. Bee will be released.Mr. Bean is no longer portrayed by Rowan Atkinson in any live-action projects, but he hasn't said goodbye to the character. He has hinted at a forthcoming animated film in which he will reprise his role as Mr. Bean. In 2021, Atkinson revealed that physically portraying Mr. Bean isn't nearly as much fun as it appears, and that the physically hard nature of the role will push him to pursue an animated adaptation for the character's anticipated return.Atkinson told Radio Times, "It's easier for me to represent the persona verbally than visually." "It's not fun for me to play him." The burden of responsibility is not easy to bear. It's difficult and exhausting for me, and I'm looking forward to the finish.
"Mr. Bean's success has never shocked me," Atkinson said, adding that he isn't a great fan of Mr. Bean personally but respects his popularity and accomplishment. It's hilarious to watch an adult behave in a juvenile manner while being completely unaware of his inappropriateness. The fact that the comedy is visual rather than verbal has contributed to its international success."
There have been no significant updates on the status of this proposed cartoon adaptation, thus it is unclear when the new Mr. Bean film will be produced. In the meantime, Man vs. Bee will be available to view on Netflix starting June 24.
