Explanation of the Strange Nicolas Cage Conspiracy Theory

1

Nicolas Cage is no stranger to strange situations. This eccentric Hollywood actor purchased one of New Orleans' most infamous homes, then had to construct a pyramid in the city's oldest cemetery to break a curse – sure, he's odd. "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," Cage's most recent film, is proof enough that he is aware of the stereotypes surrounding him. He's aware of the internet's fascination with him, as he told The Guardian in 2013: "I'm not even a computer guy, but the internet has formed this thing about me. I'm not sure why this is happening. I'm trying not to… but let me say this: I've come to believe that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em."

Cage went on to say that the fandom around him is "irony-laced adoration." Cage's participation in "Massive Talent" was his reaction to the obsessive fan culture. However, there is one particularly peculiar conspiracy idea circulating around the actor from around 2011 that is almost too bizarre to describe. Cage, on the other hand, had some things to say about the hypothesis.According to The Washington Post, in September 2011, someone on eBay claimed that an 1870 photo of Nicolas Cage was proof that he is a vampire. On the David Letterman show on February 9, 2012, Cage addressed the ridiculous conspiracy claim. Cage refuted the claim, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "There's a resemblance," he told Letterman via the Post, "but — how can I be kind about this? — it's a somewhat slowed down version of me." He continued by stating that he does not drink blood and that he sees himself in the mirror.Despite the fact that the eBay seller later removed his listing, which was worth $1 million at the time, it explained his reasoning. According to THR, the listing explained, "Personally, I believe it's him and that he's some sort of walking zombie / vampire, et cetera, who quickens / reinvents himself once every 75 years or so." In 150 years, the vampire Cage may be a politician, a cult leader, or even a talk show presenter, according to the listing. (Ironically, Cage rejected the story on a talk show.)Nicolas Cage is starring in a film based on Dracula a decade later, in an intriguing turn of events. "Renfield," his upcoming film, is about the henchman who works for Dracula in Bram Stoker's version of the story. Cage plays the vampire Dracula in the film. Cage told Variety's "Awards Circuit" podcast that he is a tremendous fan of Bram Stoker's novel and that he loved researching former cinematic Draculas in preparation for the film.

However, unlike the previous adaptations, "Renfield" is a horror comedy, which Cage was very enthusiastic about. "The fact that it's a comedy adds to the fun," he told Variety. "And it's a delight when you get the tone right – comedy and horror — like in 'American Werewolf in London.'" So maybe the vampire Cage notion was correct all along? Or is this merely a part of a long-running con? We'll have to wait and see, it appears.
