Former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) will campaign for Rep. Tom Rice (R-S.C.), one of the ten Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump following the Capitol attack on Jan. 6.

"Tom Rice is a guy of conviction and a leader who consistently prioritizes South Carolina's interests. He is a legislative workhorse who has a long history of supporting policies that help the economy thrive, reign in out-of-control spending, and improve opportunity for families and companies "Ryan made the announcement in a statement."Tom is a tireless and effective proponent of South Carolina's interests. When Republicans win the House majority in 2022, he'll have a tremendous effect, and I'm excited to spend time with him as we go around the 7th district."

On Wednesday, June 1, Ryan will speak at a Rice luncheon in Florence, S.C.

After Ryan was elected Speaker of the House in 2015, Rice, an accountant with a decade in Congress, took Ryan's seat on the influential House Ways and Means Committee. On the committee's oversight subcommittee, he is now the ranking member.

Most political watchers were taken aback when he voted to impeach Trump.

"For four years, I've stood behind this President in good times and bad. I supported him during his campaign and voted twice for him. But this complete failure is unforgivable," Rice remarked after the impeachment vote.

In the primary against Rice, Trump endorsed South Carolina state Rep. Russell Fry, calling him a "strong fighter on Election Integrity."

Rice "abandoned his constituents by bowing to Nancy Pelosi and the Radical Left," Trump said while praising Fry. Rice "really voted against me on Impeachment Hoax #2," Trump tweeted.

In Rice's primary, five other Republicans are running.

Rice has raised the most money of any of the candidates, with nearly $2 million in cash on hand at the end of the first quarter of the year. At the time, all of the other contenders' war chests amounted to less than half a million dollars.

However, according to an early May internal poll conducted by Fry's team, Fry leads Rice 39 percent to 23 percent among potential GOP primary voters.

On June 14, 2022, South Carolina will hold its primary elections.
