The nation is in mourning and shock following the horrific and unfathomable deaths of 19 students and two instructors at a school in Uvalde, Texas (via Today). Many people are perplexed as to why gun violence against children in primary schools continues a decade after the tragedy at Sandy Hook.
As parents throughout the country strive to explain the tragedy to their children and as Americans' emotions run high, the discussion over how to prevent another horrific act like this from occurring continues.
One widely held belief is that restricting gun access will reduce ostensibly evil violence. In a speech to the nation Tuesday night, even President Joe Biden encouraged individuals to "stand up to the gun lobby" (via The Washington Post). In this line, Texas Senator Ted Cruz is being chastised by Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez after he tweeted about the tragic school shooting while also planning to appear at an NRA gathering this week (via
Newsweek).Prayers Aren't Enough, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez Tells Ted CruzSenator Ted Cruz, who is prone to blunders, responded to the shooting in Uvalde on Twitter just hours after it occurred. He stated on behalf of himself and his wife, "Heidi and I are passionately lifting up in prayer the children and families in the tragic incident in Uvalde." Cruz went on to say that he was in "in contact with local officials," but that the actual facts of the horrible incident remained unknown. After that, the divisive legislator thanked first responders for their courage.
While many readers expressed displeasure at the senator's apparent hypocrisy in light of his support for gun rights, Alexandra Ocasio-reaction Cortez's has garnered a lot of attention. "Aren't you scheduled to headline a speaking engagement for the NRA in three days – in Houston, no less?" the New York rep tweeted to Cruz. "More than pray," she said of the Texan. "Faith without works is dead," the congressman declared at the end.
The conservative had not responded to Ocasio-Cruz as of the time of writing.
