Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a former Trump press secretary, has been elected governor of Arkansas by the Republican Party.Sanders has been the front-runner since announcing her candidacy last year, after her father, Mike Huckabee, served as governor from 1996 to 2007. Term limitations have made the governorship of Republican Asa Hutchinson vacant. Sanders is a strong favorite to win in November, with Arkansas now a deep-red state. On the day she declared her run for governor in January 2021, former President Donald Trump endorsed his former spokeswoman.
"Arkansas is a state I adore. 35 of my 39 years have been spent here. I adore every tiny town, restaurant, and community's culture, and I want my children to inherit the same passion for Arkansas that I did as a child "In April, Sanders remarked. "I want them to inherit that goodness that I believe Arkansas represents after touring the state with my father and seeing all 75 counties.
She consistently outperformed her single Republican opponent, radio broadcaster Francis "Doc" Washburn, throughout the campaign. Chris Jones, the Democratic nominee, will be her opponent in November.Sanders is no stranger to Arkansas politics, having worked on her father's campaigns throughout her youth and getting her start in national politics while working on his 2008 presidential campaign.
From July 2017 through July 2018, Sanders served as Trump's press secretary. She was a vociferous Trump supporter who had a tense relationship with White House reporters at times.
