Senator Ted Cruz's law license is being challenged by a legal advocacy group.
The ethics complaint was based on Cruz's attempts to sway the 2020 election.
It wants Cruz to be "punished for his behaviour," as Trump's ally Rudy Giuliani was. This year has been a whirlwind of legal battles for Donald Trump and his friends.
Investigations into his company's finances, as well as those into the events of January 6, are still underway.
This year's important dates are as follows.Since leaving the White House, former President Donald Trump has won a slew of unexpected court triumphs, however his biggest legal challenges are still to come.
Summer Zervos, who had accused Trump of sexual assault after appearing on "The Apprentice," abandoned her lawsuit against him in November, before he had to testify for a deposition. Around the same time, a New York state judge dismissed Michael Cohen's claim seeking reimbursement for legal bills he incurred while working for Trump.
However, there are more serious threats. The Manhattan district attorney's office and the New York attorney general's office are both looking into allegations of financial malfeasance at the Trump Organization.
Fani Willis, the district attorney for Fulton County in Atlanta, is considering charges related to his conduct during the 2020 election. These investigations are ongoing as the Justice Department approaches a five-year deadline to charge Trump with obstruction of justice, which former Special Counsel Robert Mueller III looked into as part of his probe into Russian election meddling in 2016.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration continues to provide Trump's White House papers to the House committee probing the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021. And, as a result of the January 6 uprising, Trump and many of his supporters are facing federal investigations and lawsuits. Expect court dates to be scheduled later this year by the judges in those matters.
While Trump considers re-running for president in 2024, the year 2022 is shaping up to be a legal nightmare for him and his cronies. Here's a rundown of Trumpworld's threats.Visit Business Insider to read the original story.
A group of legal activists demanded that Texas Senator Ted Cruz be investigated and barred from practicing law for his "leading role" in attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
The 65 Project filed a 15-page ethical complaint with the Texas State Bar on Wednesday. It demanded an investigation into Cruz's behavior between Election Day in 2020 and January 6, 2021, the day of the Capitol incident.
"Mr. Cruz was a key player in the campaign to rig the 2020 elections. While this can be argued of a number of other elected officials, Mr. Cruz's involvement was clearly distinct "read the formal complaint
Cruz was also accused of playing "the role of lawyer" in assisting former President Donald Trump in contesting the election results, according to the complaint."By doing so, Mr. Cruz aimed to use more than his Twitter account and media appearances to help Mr. Trump's anti-democratic objective," according to the complaint.Cruz "knew charges of voter fraud or election theft were baseless," according to the complaint. It also referenced the suspension of Trump ally Rudy Giuliani's law license, stating that "just as Mr. Giuliani has been reprimanded for his conduct, so should Mr. Cruz."
"During Mr. Trump's assault on our democracy," the complaint continued, "Mr. Cruz chose to add his professional license to Mr. Trump's arsenal." "He cannot be exempt from the repercussions of that decision merely because, unlike Mr. Trump's other lawyers, he happens to be in a position of high public authority."
The 65 Project's advisory board has five members, including retired Utah Supreme Court Chief Justice Christine Durham and Paul Rosenzweig, a former top US Homeland Security officer who probed the Clintons. David Brock, a Hillary Clinton supporter, is also involved with the group.
The organization's mission entails making "accountable the lawyers who raise bogus claims to overturn valid election results, as well as developing a rule-based framework to avoid future efforts and enhance the mechanisms for responsibility and deterrent," according to the organization.
The 65 Project, a spokesman for Cruz told The New York Times, was a "labor of love" for him "A who's who of unscrupulous Democrat hacks runs the extreme left dark money slander machine. They're not a trustworthy organization, therefore their complaint will be worthless."
The New York Times did not mention any proof provided by Cruz's spokesman to back up his claim. Insider reached out to Cruz and Trump's representatives for comment, but they did not immediately answer.
The complaint served the objective of making it apparent that those who make false assertions and "transgress" norms will "at minimum suffer the public penalty of being called out for your misconduct," according to Rosenzweig, one of the group's members.
