Since Russia invaded the country earlier this year, Ukraine has asked for greater foreign assistance and other resources. While Ukraine has forced a withdrawal in certain towns, like Kharkiv, it still requires extra assistance to fight.

This week, McConnell told Senate colleagues that he supported the latest package of aid approved by the US House.

"Helping Ukraine is more than generosity. According to a news release posted on McConnell's website, "Russia's unabashed aggression has serious costs and bears directly on America's national security and fundamental interests."

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky halted a $40 billion aid plan for Ukraine on Friday, despite McConnell's support.

Paul sought to include in the bill a clause that would appoint an inspector general to oversee how the money was spent. When that didn't happen, he objected, thus forcing the Senate to postpone the vote on Ukraine funding until next week due to procedural restrictions.

McConnell's spokesman did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
