LONDON — After Spurs smashed open north London's race for the top four with two games remaining in the Premier League season, Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte instructed Mikel Arteta to quit whining and focus on his squad.
Spurs' 3-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium reduced Arsenal's lead to a single point. In the aftermath, Arteta was enraged by referee Paul Tierney's performance, which saw Rob Holding sent out and Conte's team granted a penalty for a foul by Cedric on Heung-min Son.As Arteta railed at the officiating, Conte was less than impressed with the frequency with which his north London adversary appeared to find something to complain about. Tierney should come out and explain his judgments after "a fantastic game was destroyed tonight," the Arsenal manager stated.
Conte showed the losing coach very little compassion. Instead, he cited Arteta's previous complaints about Arsenal's fixture scheduling, citing the postponement of this game, which was originally scheduled for January before the Gunners successfully secured its postponement due to Premier League COVID-19 regulations despite having only one case in the squad, and urging the Spaniard to listen to his more experienced counterpart.
Conte stated, "Mikel Arteta is an excellent coach." "I guess I listen to him whine a lot because he's new to this position."
"I believe he should devote more attention to his colleagues and refrain from venting because he has only recently begun this job." I believe he should remain cool and attempt to continue working because he is talented, but it is not nice to listen to a coach whine frequently. It's OK. For me, it was an obvious red card.
"I believe he has the potential to be a significant coach in the future, but I have listened to him moan a lot in the last six months." I repeat: it's merely suggestion; he's excellent."
Conte stated that Fabinho only received a yellow card for a tackle on Son in Tottenham's previous encounter, a 1-1 draw away to Liverpool. Though he maintained he wasn't complaining, he did point out that his team had a short turnaround time before their home match against Burnley on Sunday at lunchtime. For Monday's night match, Arsenal will visit Newcastle United.
"If you recall, he grumbled about the fixture," Conte stated in response to a question from CBS Sports about which occurrences over the last six months he had noted as examples of Arteta's complaints. Complaining isn't healthy. Arsenal did a fantastic job of postponing a game with COVID despite having only one player with the disease. This is something I will never forget. We have several options for him to complain about if he wants to.
"Now I can whine about why I have to play on Sunday at 12 p.m. and Arsenal has to play on Monday night," he said. They also receive one extra day off. We played Leicester, Liverpool, and Arsenal, and now we have to play again in just two days, with the first game scheduled at 12 p.m."
Arteta is unlikely to get involved in a verbal battle, with the Arsenal boss indicating in his post-match press conference that he wanted to put a bad night behind him, at least if he couldn't express what he actually thought of Tierney.
"It's vital that the disappointment doesn't overshadow the amazing chance and the lovely two games that we've added to our schedule," he said. He could have to prepare for his trip to St James' Park with a limited number of center backs at his disposal. Arsenal are unable to appeal what were two distinct yellow card situations, notwithstanding their displeasure over Holding's red card.
After Holding was sent off, Gabriel, who is "usually not a guy who wants to or requests to come off the game," staggered off with a muscular complaint, while Ben White, who has been dealing with a hamstring condition, was deemed unfit to play.
