Comedian Dave Chappelle was assaulted onstage at the Hollywood Bowl stadium in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, with cellphone images swiftly circulating on social media showing a man appear to rush onto the platform and tackle the comic.
Chappelle, whose outspoken humor has made him a lightning rod for criticism, looked unfazed by the interruption and subsequently joked with fellow comedian and actor Jamie Foxx onstage that he'd exacted vengeance on his assailant. (NOTE: Linked video includes severe language including profanity.)Videos on Twitter appeared to show the person who charged Chappelle being apprehended by police outside the venue and then loaded into an ambulance with visible injuries.
Multiple others onstage fought the man soon after he attacked Chappelle, according to witnesses and footage.
Cell phone use was officially banned during the concert, despite the fact that the entire incident was documented in various videos shot by audience members.
The initial attack's motive remained unknown, and the Los Angeles Police Department did not respond to CBS News' request for information on the event.
Late last year, the transgender community chastised Chappelle for jokes about them in his Netflix special "The Closer," which debuted in October.
Despite hundreds of Netflix employees staging a walk-out over what they considered to be Chappelle's transphobic jokes, Netflix stood behind the Washington, D.C. native, continuing to stream the special.
Later, the comedian stated that he would be pleased to meet with any transgender person, but that he would not be swayed by "anyone's demands" to edit his routine."I am more than prepared to offer the transgender community a platform, but you will not call on me. I'm not going to bow down to anyone's demands "In a video posted to his Instagram account, he told an audience this.
Chapelle's Netflix special was dubbed "hate speech" by fellow comic Hannah Gadsby, so the 48-year-old comedian issued three conditions for any future meeting.
"I'd be delighted to meet with you, but there are some conditions: first and foremost, you must have watched my program from beginning to end. You must appear at a time and location that I specify. Finally, Hannah Gadsby isn't humorous."
