The SHARO Festival Of The Fulani’s

1

Sharo is a traditional cultural practice where young Fulani men in Nigeria compete to find a wife, to gauge the participants’ stamina, wooden sticks and canes are used to beat them.

The Fulani tribe of Nigeria is well-known for this customary practice. The Fulani are a pastoralist ethnic group that is semi-nomadic.

This practicen is called Sharo and is carried out before marriage. The groom is badly beaten by elderly members of the community to test his level of endurance. He obtains respect and approval as a result, which allows him to win the woman over.

The wedding is called off if the groom is unable to endure the flogging’s pain. The dowry payment is reversible, which is worse. Would you tolerate abuse in order to have a wife? Is this a system meant to appropriately treat a wife?

Well, the practice has waned in recent years, with some Fulani men denouncing it as hazardous and banned in Islam.
