Four years to the day after announcing his 2020 run, President Joe Biden made his re-election bid official on Tuesday, putting an end to months of rumors about his intentions.
After spending his first term fighting for the nation’s democracy, Biden claimed that “MAGA extremists are lining up” to cut the social safety net and take away personal liberties in a video titled “Freedom,” which opens with a scene of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and is followed by an image of an abortion rights protest.
“Reducing taxes for the extremely rich while reducing Social Security benefits that you have paid for your entire life. dictating who people can love, prohibiting certain literature, and limiting the health care decisions that women can make. All the while making it more challenging for you to cast a ballot,” he said.
He argued there was still work for his administration to perform.
“Four years ago, when I ran for president, I declared that a struggle for America’s soul was underway. We’re still here. Whether we will have more freedom or less freedom in the next years is the question we must answer. More rights or less,” he said, adding, “This is not the time to be complacent. I’m running for reelection because of this.
The goal of the launch is to cast Biden as the country’s best chance to defeat a Republican challenger and solidify his administration’s accomplishments going into 2024.
The symmetry of the fourth anniversary provides a suitable introduction for a president who has leaned on history at crucial points to sell Americans on his vision for the future.
In a video message, Biden also announced his candidacy for president in 2019. He warned that four more years of Donald Trump will “forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation, who we are,” while also citing the carnage at the Charlottesville, Virginia, white nationalist event in 2017.
