The Covenant School is a Christian private school, located in the Green Hills neighborhood, that educates students from pre-kindergarten to the sixth grade. It was founded in 2001 as a ministry of Nashville's Covenant Presbyterian Church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America, and typically has around 200 students enrolled.

The Covenant School, a Presbyterian private school in Nashville, Tennessee, the United States, experienced a mass shooting on March 27, 2023. Three kids and three employees were among the seven fatalities. Police responded to the shooting by shooting and killing the gunman, Audrey Elizabeth Hale, 28, a former pupil.

SHOOTING

The shooting began during the morning at around 10:13 a.m. CDT.

According to police, the shooter, Audrey Hale, drove a Honda Fit to the school, parking it in the lot. Hale then shot through a side door to gain entry into the building, armed with an assault-style rifle, an assault-style pistol, and a handgun.

Hale traversed the second floor of the school before opening fire. When police officers arrived, they began to evacuate the first floor until they heard gunshots coming from the second floor.

They quickly moved there and encountered Hale, who was still firing. The officers engaged and fatally shot Hale at 10:27 a.m.

Three children and three staff members were killed in the attack, with one police officer suffering a hand injury from shattered glass.

VICTIMS

The shooting left six people dead: three staff members and three children. Six individuals were involved in the incident, and five of them were declared dead at a nearby hospital. Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney, and Hallie Scruggs, three 9-year-old children, as well as Cynthia Peak, a 61-year-old substitute teacher, Mike Hill, a 61-year-old groundskeeper, and Katherine Koonce, 60, the school's principal, were named as the victims.

PERPETRATOR

Audrey Elizabeth Hale, a 28-year-old Nashville resident who police claim identified as transgender, was named as the shooter.
Hale attended the school from a young age and had no prior criminal history. The Tennessean said that Hale identified as a trans guy and used male pronouns. Hale was assigned female at birth, according to a police official, yet on a LinkedIn site, she used male pronouns. Hale, a graphic designer and illustrator, earned a degree from the Nossi College of Art and Design in 2022. Hale, according to a neighbor, resides with his parents.

When detectives examined Hale's home, they discovered a manifesto and a detailed plan of the school with possible entrances.

Before launching the attack, Hale is said to have conducted research. According to police, Hale had initially planned attacking a different venue but decided against it because of the tight protection there. The day of the shooting, at 9:57 a.m., Hale informed a former middle school basketball teammate that he intended to commit suicide.
