Debunking Tech Myths

PRIVATE BROWSING MODE KEEPS DATA PRIVATE

Use the private/incognito browser window if you don't want to be monitored or leave any traces of your browsing anywhere.

DEBUNKING THE MYTH

Someone constantly claims that using a hidden browser window is a simpler alternative to obscuring your online activity whenever I discuss VPNs and the privacy they provide. I'm more worried that people don't even take the time to read the private window's warning that it won't make you invisible rather than that they believe private mode can make them invisible.

Every browser's private window expressly states that it will only delete locally saved data. Just have a look at this help article for Chrome's Incognito window to see how any outside source can still monitor your behavior.

Your internet service provider, the network administrator at your school or place of business, the websites you visit, the online services you use (like Facebook), and even an external monitoring program placed on your computer are examples of these external sources.

The best option for online security and privacy is still a VPN. When erasing locally stored information like history, cookies, form entries, cache, etc., only trust a private window.
