The collapse at Southwest Airlines that resulted in the cancellation of thousands of flights has been referred to by the administration of US President Joe Biden as a "system failure," and the airline itself has been blamed for the catastrophe.
Pete Buttigieg, secretary of transportation, stated on Wednesday that the degree of cancellations at Southwest cannot be justified by the terrible weather, despite the fact that a historic winter storm known as the "blizzard of the century" had blanketed the nation around the holiday weekend.
In an interview with ABC News, Buttigieg stated that "this is past the point where they could say this is a weather-driven issue." "Don't get me wrong, that powerful storm was the beginning of it all. Winter weather had a significant impact on the nation and its airlines.
But he pointed out that while Southwest was still having trouble, other airlines had largely recovered from the disaster.
Since Friday, Southwest has canceled more than 14,500 flights, according to Reuters. By early afternoon on Wednesday, 2,500 flights had been canceled, according to the flight monitoring service FlightAware."This shows a system failure, therefore they need to make sure that these stranded passengers go where they need to go and that they are given adequate compensation, not just for the flights themselves… but also accommodations, ground transportation, and meals because this is the obligation of the airlines," Buttigieg added.
The airline's CEO, Bob Jordan, apologized to clients and staff on Tuesday for the widespread cancellations.
He added in a video message that "the mechanisms we employ to recover from interruption serve us well 99 percent of the time." But obviously, we need to intensify our current plans to strengthen systems for these extreme circumstances so that we never again have to deal with what is occurring now.
According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), Buttigieg talked to Jordan on Tuesday and told him that he "expects the airline to live up to the commitments it has made to passengers, including providing meal vouchers, refunds, and hotel accommodations for those experiencing significant delays or cancellations that came about as a result of Southwest's decisions and actions."This week, Southwest developed a web interface to assist impacted consumers in requesting refunds and additional costs.
Buttigieg suggested that suspected overbooking of flights at Southwest may have contributed to the problem in a separate interview with ABC News late on Tuesday. He added that "what appears to be a lack of investment in the software systems that enable [the airline] to assign crews and planes to where they need to be" was another contributing factor.
Buttigieg, a former Democratic presidential candidate and mayor of a small town, was singled out by several detractors for failing to perform satisfactorily in his capacity as the head of the Department of Transportation.
Following the Omicron form of the coronavirus pandemic, major flight cancellations affected holiday travel last year as well. Regular flight delays continued well into 2022.
How is [Buttigieg] doing? Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee tweeted on Wednesday using the hashtag "SouthwestAirlines."

Buttigieg replied that he was utilizing the resources and power of his agency to "achieve results for travelers" on Capitol Hill.
The secretary of transportation was criticized by some progressives who have been pushing for stronger regulations on the airline industry.
Progressive activist Nina Turner stated on Twitter that Southwest's careless attitude toward customers was caused by the absence of monitoring and responsibility from Secretary Buttigieg's DOT. "People have been criticizing the DOT for MONTHS," someone said.
Senator Bernie Sanders, a liberal, urged the Biden administration to tighten control of airlines earlier this year by fining them for overbooking and flight delays.
In a letter to Buttigieg in June, Sanders stated that airline travelers "all around this country are growing increasingly irritated by the tremendous increase in flight delays, cancellations, and ridiculously high rates they are forced to pay for tickets, checked bags, and other expenses."
