Putin’s proposal to cease the fighting in Ukraine is deemed disingenuous by the US

The United States sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his calls for an end to the war in Ukraine, claiming he had showed "zero" enthusiasm in peace talks.

"Our goal is to terminate this war, not to spin the flywheel of armed conflict," Putin declared on Thursday.

We will work to put an end to this, obviously the sooner the better.

"Every military confrontation ends in some fashion with negotiations on the diplomatic track," he continued.

"Any parties in a state of dispute sit down and come to an arrangement sooner or later. The sooner those who disagree with us realize this, the better. On this, we have never given up.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, visited the White House and subsequently gave a passionate speech to the US Congress in which he emphasized that supporting Ukraine was an investment in security and democracy for the entire globe. Putin's remarks were made at the same time.

In conjunction with Zelensky's first reported journey outside of Ukraine since Russia's invasion in February, the US also unveiled an additional $1.85 billion in military aid for Kyiv.

In reaction to Putin's remarks on peace, Washington reacted quickly.

Putin has "given absolutely nothing evidence that he's willing to talk," according to John Kirby, the White House's national security spokesman, to end the 10-month standoff.

Kirby told reporters in an online briefing, "Quite the reverse. Putin is acting in a way that "betrays a man who wants to continue inflicting bloodshed on the Ukrainian people" and "intensify the war," according to the report.US President Joe Biden was willing to speak with Putin, according to Kirby, but only if he "showed a sincerity about negotiations."

Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, echoed Kirby's remarks.Blinken stated during a press conference on Thursday that "Russia has fundamentally right now demonstrated no interest in genuine diplomacy, in meaningfully engaging, to bring this war to a conclusion."

Blinken underlined that a simple withdrawal of Russian forces would put an end to the crisis.

In the absence of such, Blinken added, "we have to see some meaningful proof that Russia is actually prepared to negotiate a just and lasting peace."

By just, he meant "one that doesn't just validate one country occupying another's land forcibly."

Durable in the sense that we want to ensure that it holds and avoid placing Ukraine in a position where Russia repeats what it did a month, six months, or a year later, he continued.

The Kremlin's statements for peace have frequently come under fire from Ukraine and its supporters as disingenuous attempts to stall following months of protracted failures on the battlefield.

Putin also downplayed the Patriot air defense system that Biden promised to give Kiev on Thursday.

In comparison to Russia's S-300 system, he called the Patriots "very ancient," and he asserted that Moscow would look for a way to outwit and "crack" the advanced surface-to-air missile defense system.

Regarding the Patriot system, Putin asserted that "an antidote will always be found."

Therefore, people who do it are wasting their time. Simply put, it only makes the conflict last longer.Numerous people are surviving without heat, water, or electricity as a result of the Kremlin's relentless bombardment, which has been hitting "critical infrastructure" such as power plants and energy supply hubs in the country's capital region and other locations. Thousands of Ukrainian civilians have died and the population is suffering from harsh winter conditions.
