McCarthy responds to GOP House members’ demands to remove Biden from office.

The (Bloomberg) Republican leader in the House Kevin McCarthy resisted calls from some members of the party to impeach President Joe Biden or members of his cabinet if the party wins control in 2014.

McCarthy stated that he doesn't see the basis for impeaching Biden or members of his cabinet "right now" in an interview that was published on Wednesday by Punchbowl News.

"I believe that using impeachment for political reasons is not popular in this country at all. McCarthy told Punchbowl News, "If someone ever rises to that occasion, you have to, but I think the country wants to heal.

Despite never being found guilty in the Senate, former President Donald Trump was twice removed from office by the Democratic-controlled House. Several Trump supporters in the House, including Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security, and Merrick Garland, the attorney general, have called for or introduced resolutions to impeach Biden.

Prior to the November midterm elections, Republicans have made a determined effort to keep the spotlight on Biden's management of the economy, which they see as their greatest strength. This effort is evident in McCarthy's remarks.

But the speaker who would likely speak next did not completely rule out impeachment. But even if Biden or a member of his Cabinet were to be impeached by the House the next year, it is improbable that a Senate trial would result in a conviction forcing the accused to resign from office, as such a conviction needs 67 votes to pass. In the midterm elections for the Senate, Republicans are not expected to pick up quite as many seats.
