The Television Academy revealed on Saturday that Barack Obama, a relative newcomer to Hollywood, had won an Emmy for narrating his Netflix documentary series "Our Great National Parks."With two Grammy Awards already under his belt for the audiobooks of his memoirs "The Audacity of Hope" and "Dreams from My Father," the former US president now needs an Oscar and a Tony to clinch the prestigious EGOT.
Only 17 people have received an EGOT, including Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn, and most recently, Jennifer Hudson, according to an Entertainment Weekly tracker.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, another president, received an Emmy in 1956, though it was an honorary distinction.
Obama and his wife Michelle both published best-selling autobiographies after they left office in 2017, and in addition to establishing a non-profit foundation, they also started a production company that has signed a significant deal with Netflix that is reportedly worth tens of millions of dollars. The Oscar for best documentary feature and an Emmy for directing were given to the filmmakers, not the Obamas, for their first streaming service documentary produced by their company, "American Factory."
Despite being nominated twice, Donald Trump, Obama's replacement as president, did not take home an Emmy for his reality competition program "The Apprentice."
Former NBA great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ("Black Patriots: Heroes Of The Civil War"), Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o ("Serengeti II"), and seasoned naturalist David Attenborough were also nominated in Obama's narrator category ("The Mating Game").
After winning the 2008 presidential election, Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his "exceptional efforts to improve international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
