The USSR had a variety of leaders during the course of its existence, some of whom had a greater influence than others. The Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was both influential and unique. Gorbachev, the final living head of the former Soviet Union, passed away on August 20, 2022. Gorbachev's political career was troubled by disputes and peculiarities, as reported by Reuters. Gorbachev oversaw the Soviet Union's collapse, which had already been considerably undermined by his internal policy decisions. The Cold War was ended by Gorbachev, who also forged a number of alliances with the USSR's adversaries in the west, including President Ronald Reagan, and helped advance the unification of Germany. To the amusement of many, Gorbachev also appeared in commercials for other products. One of the more prominent of these was a Pizza Hut commercial he appeared in in 1998. According to Newsweek, he had a modeling contract with Louis Vuitton as well. Along with his marketing stunts, he also criticized other politicians harshly, especially Donald Trump. As reported by CNBC, Gorbachev really criticized Trump's judgment in 2018 for his choice to have the United States leave a pact that called for the disarming of nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union, like many other nations, has a convoluted past. According to Britannica, the USSR's early years were marked by conflict, including civil war, slaughter, and revolution. After the Russian Revolution, the Bolshevik leadership under Lenin converted the nation into an industrial powerhouse, which is when much of Russia's modern development occurred. The USSR would eventually develop into a nuclear superpower, triggering the Cold War with the US. Mikhail Gorbachev was the person who helped put an end to the Cold War and build a bridge between Russia and the West.

Gorbachev witnessed the fall of the USSR under his direction, according to Reuters. In 1985, he was elected general secretary of the Communist Party. In 1990, he was elected president, ushering in a wave of reforms. Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize the same year he was elected president and would go on to win numerous other awards for his humanitarian work (per The Gorbachev Foundation). As the last surviving leader of the Soviet Union, he left behind a complex legacy that included both his detractors and unexpected supporters. Most of the controversies involving Donald Trump have already been resolved. The billionaire and former president, according to The Atlantic, was involved in a long number of crimes, including fraud, bigotry, and sexual assault. Trump's decision to pull the US out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty was one of his more divisive actions while president. According to the BBC, the formal withdrawal took place on August 2, 2019, and it drew criticism. The agreement, which Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan signed in 1987, prohibits both nations from using intermediate-range nuclear, ballistic, and cruise missiles (310–3,400 miles) (per the Arms Control Association). One of the spectators who spoke out against the American president was Gorbachev. Gorbachev blasted the pullout, saying it was "not the work of a brilliant mind," as reported by CNBC. Many authorities perceived the action as an escalation of American-Russian relations reminding them of the Cold War. Gorbachev's remark was one of the more blunt ones, nonetheless, regarding the pullout.
