After a coronavirus outbreak led to a lockdown and more than 80,000 guests were left stranded, the resort in China became a popular tourist destination.
A day after 263 positive cases were verified, authorities on Saturday grounded all trains and planes from Sanya, also known as "China's Hawaii".Before being allowed to go, travelers must must submit five negative PCR results over a seven-day period.
Only China, a large economy, continues to adhere to the "zero Covid" policy.
Johns Hopkins University estimates that less than 15,000 fatalities have been reported in the nation since the pandemic started. However, there have been worries about how the severe regulations, which include widespread testing and local lockdowns, may affect the economy.Sanya, a renowned surfing destination on the southern Hainan Island, is subject to limitations during the busy travel season.
The AFP news agency writes that while entertainment venues have been closed since last week, essential services like pharmacy and supermarkets are still operating.
Until limitations are eased, hotels will be asked to offer a 50% discount, according to the authorities.
Sanya is not the only city that has experienced a lockdown recently. Following the confirmation of four asymptomatic instances this month, a million residents of a suburb of Wuhan, the central Chinese city where Covid-19 was initially identified, were subject to further restrictions.
Meanwhile, the 25 million people living in Shanghai were allowed to leave their city's stringent two-month lockdown in June.
