An era came to an end with him. Amazingly, Henry VIII's "most devoted servant" was put to death on this day. You're only as good as your previous trade, according to a proverb on Wall Street. Thomas Cromwell's issue it was without a doubt.Consider this. Before Cromwell arrived and founded the Church of England, Henry attempted to divorce Catherine of Aragon for seven years without success. Prior to Cromwell's suggestion to dissolve the abbeys, Henry was broke as a result of his extravagant spending habits. Finally, when Henry grew bored of his second wife, Cromwell devised a plan to get rid of her and assign the blame for all the nation's problems to her. He ought to have been protected for life after providing such devoted and consistent service.
Then, though, Spain and France formed an alliance, leaving England in the dark. Thomas Cromwell also stated that a partnership with the German league would be the best defense for England. Politically, he was dead on, but he neglected to take into account the fact that the King had abandoned the practice of political marriages, if he ever had. It was too simple for Henry to assume that Cromwell had sacrificed him in order to fulfill his aspirations of change when he developed an instant distaste for Anne of Cleves. All of Cromwell's accomplishments were suddenly reframed via this self-centered viewpoint.
Normally, that wouldn't have been disastrous, but Cromwell had turned the Duke of Norfolk into a lifelong enemy. Cromwell probably would have been safe had Henry fallen in love with someone other than the elderly Duke's niece. Norfolk, however, pushed Cromwell aside by using his improved access to the King. Permanently.
It's interesting to note that Henry only publicly grieved the death of Cromwell. After the fact, Henry recognized he had been duped. Thomas Cromwell was a little late…You'll adore these publications if you enjoy my blogs! The engrossing tale of the short-lived monarchy that contributed to the Tudor Era is told in my Seymour Saga trilogy. The Path to Somerset is pure Game of Thrones (without the dragons), Jane the Quene has a romantic leaning, and The Boy King is a noir coming-of-age story.
