France Energy: To reduce waste, air-conditioned stores must close their doors.

In an effort to reduce energy waste, a minister has announced that shops in France will be required to cover doors when using air conditioning and limit neon lighting.

Agnes Pannier-Runacher, France's Minister of Ecological Transition, told the Journal du Dimanche daily that these regulations, which are already in place in some places, will be implemented nationwide.

European energy prices have skyrocketed since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Shops who violate the air-conditioning restriction will be subject to fines of up to €750 (£640).

It is "absurd" to leave doors open when the air conditioner is running, Ms. Pannier-Runacher told the local radio station RMC.

According to the Journal du Dimanche, she will publish two decrees against energy waste in the upcoming days.According to her, "the first will expand the prohibition on illuminated advertising, regardless of the size of the city, between 01:00 and 06:00."

"The second will prohibit businesses from leaving their doors open when the heating and air conditioning are operating."

In places with fewer than 800,000 inhabitants, the prohibition on neon signs is already in effect. Stations and airports are exempt.Energy rationing in the EU cannot be ruled out, according to Shell, as the continent battles to deal with the disruption of Russian gas supplies.

France is still having extremely hot weather, which is driving up demand for air conditioning.
