In his final big test before a general election that is scheduled for less than a year, Thailand's Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has survived a no-confidence vote in parliament.

The 68-year-old former army chief, who was interrogated over the course of four days and was subjected to live television coverage, received enough votes on Saturday to secure his position as prime minister until the end of his term in March.Prayuth and his administration have been accused by the opposition of economic incompetence and corruption, and their removal from office would require more than 239 of the 477 parliamentary votes.

Prayuth ultimately received 256 votes, while 206 people voted against him. Nine people chose not to vote.

It was the fourth time Prayuth's performance as prime minister has been put to a vote since the house elected him to continue in that position in 2019, following an election that the opposition claimed was conducted in a way that would keep him in office. Prayuth, who first took control in a coup in 2014, has denied the assertion. In the previous vote for confidence, held in September of last year, Prayuth's administration received 264 votes despite criticism of how it handled the coronavirus pandemic.Since two years ago, there have been demonstrations demanding the resignation of the prime leader and the holding of fresh elections, and recent surveys indicate Prayuth's support is dwindling.

Prayuth has not stated a date for the calling of elections.
