Google CEO Issues Unsettling Economic Warning

The internet behemoth appears to be saying that it won't be exempt from the coming hardships.Investors who are selling up their holdings in digital giants appear to believe that many global corporations would not be spared by a potential recession.

Google's parent firm, Alphabet ((GOOGL) – Get Alphabet Inc. Report), appears to support their claims. The California corporation, with headquarters in Mountain View, is geared up for adversity. In fact, Sundar Pichai, the CEO, just informed staff that it's likely the business won't be exempt from a possible recession.

According to Pichai in an internal memo seen by TheStreet and confirmed by a spokesman, "the uncertain global economic picture has been top of mind." "We are not immune to economic challenges, like any businesses. We've never seen these kinds of difficulties as impediments, which is something I value about our culture. We have instead viewed them as chances to narrow our focus and make long-term investments."

For instance, the internet behemoth and its subsidiary Youtube may be impacted if businesses cut their marketing and advertising spending to balance their budgets with the decline in consumer and household spending.

Google will take precautions to control its own costs in order to prevent any unpleasant surprises and, more importantly, to prepare for a major slowdown in the economy. Due to a looming recession, the internet behemoth will reduce recruiting for the remainder of the year."For the remainder of the year, we'll slow down hiring while continuing to support our most crucial initiatives. For the remaining months of 2022 and 2023, we'll concentrate on hiring for essential roles in engineering, technology, and other areas, and we'll make sure the outstanding talent we do hire is in line with our long-term priorities "Pichai declared.Google needs to be "more entrepreneurial, working with greater urgency, sharper concentration, and more hunger than we've exhibited on sunnier days," the chief executive officer continued.

"That may entail streamlining procedures and consolidating investments where they overlap. In other situations, that entails stopping development and shifting resources to other important areas. Making the company more efficient is up to all of us; stay tuned as we develop new opportunities for you to participate and contribute suggestions.

When the technology industry has experienced economic downturns in the past, Google has frequently remained largely unaffected. To see a halt in hiring at the internet giant, you must go back to the financial crisis. But Google has kept on hiring ever since. According to a statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the corporation employed 163,906 employees as of March 31, an increase of 17.1% from the previous year (SEC)

The impact of a looming recession worries more than just Google. The CEO of massive social media company Meta Platforms ((META) – Get Meta Platforms Inc. Report), Mark Zuckerberg, predicted "one of the biggest downturns that we've seen in recent history" on June 30.

As a result, Meta will emphasize its cost-cutting strategy. In contrast to an early projection of 10,000 new hires, the company only aims to hire between 6,000 and 7,000 new engineers in 2022, according to Reuters. Therefore, the adjustment ranges from 30% to 40%

By reducing the amount of staff it hires, software behemoth Microsoft ((MSFT) – Get Microsoft Corporation Report) is also hedging against an economic slowdown. Employees must first obtain approval from Rajesh Jha's management team, the executive vice president in charge of Office and a portion of Windows, before creating new positions. There will be fewer hires for the Teams, Office, and Windows chat and conferencing software departments.
