In an email to CNN, Republican Senator Mitt Romney stated that he favors raising the age to purchase assault guns from 18 to 21.
As the US debates gun regulation in the wake of a string of mass shootings, one of the most common recommendations has been to raise the age limit for when people can legally acquire AR-15s and other comparable weapons.Ana Cabrera of CNN was addressing the Democratic drive for gun control with Manu Raju when she revealed that the network had received an email from Romney's staff saying that "he supports raising the age to acquire assault style guns from 18 to 21."
Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), who is leading the current Democratic push in Congress to pass gun control legislation, recently voiced optimism that he will be able to secure the backing of at least ten Republicans. Despite Romney's warning, Raju told Cabrera that lifting the age limit has "not been part of talks" in the Senate, and that "there is just simply not enough Republican support" for it, despite Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's openness.
Senator Mitt Romney is encouraged by gun reform discussions in Washington, D.C.While the Senate has yet to properly construct a gun safety bill, a small number of House Republicans have shown support for raising the legal assault rifle ownership age to 21.
