Harini Logan, 14, won the first-ever spell-off at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2022 on Thursday night, making history.

A trophy and a payment for $50,000 were presented to the San Antonio native.

Harini competed against Vikram Raju, 12, in a 90-second spell-off.

Vikram accurately spelled 15 out of 19 words, whereas Harini correctly spelled 21 out of 26.Harini stated on stage, holding the prize, "I think honestly so bizarre, it's my fourth time at the Bee." "This is a dream come true; this is my fourth bee, and I'm ecstatic."
Harini had this to say about the first ever spell-off: "I was a little nervous at first, but I decided to go with the flow… All I had to do was take a deep breath and tell myself to go out there and do my best, and whatever happens would happen."The National Spelling Bee, which showcases elementary and middle school pupils spelling words that most adults would find difficult, has had a turbulent few years.
The competition was terminated in 2020 as a result of Covid-19, a major change for what is regarded as the country's largest and longest-running educational program. (In 1925, the National Spelling Bee began.)
Last year, the Bee made a comeback, but with some tweaks. The competition had 209 entrants, down from 562 in 2019. Three rounds were done digitally rather than in person. The finals were thus held in person at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, rather than in National Harbor in Maryland, as they had done in previous years.

Despite the fact that numbers are still down from pre-pandemic levels, this year's competition started with 234 entrants, up from the previous year. Only 12 people from the original field competed in the finals on Thursday.

The Bee's televised broadcast was another notable change this year. The competition aired on ION and Bounce after nearly three decades on ESPN. The Scripps National Spelling Bee has been broadcast on ESPN since 1994, long before any of the current contenders were born.

The preliminary rounds started on Tuesday, and the quarterfinals and semifinals followed on Wednesday.

LeVar Burton served as the host this year. The event's semifinal and final rounds were hosted by the Emmy and Grammy award winner.

Burton described the job as "an honor" in a December statement.

"I, like many others, look forward to the competition every year and am thrilled to be a part of this fantastic tradition that honors excellence," he added.
