Reuters, WASHINGTON Bill De Blasio, the former mayor of New York City, announced on Friday that he will run for Congress in New York's newly constructed 10th district, which covers sections of Manhattan and his hometown of Brooklyn.

"People always ask me if things are going to improve. Yes, but WE must improve them, I say from my heart. The only way to save our democracy in our communities and nation is to participate in it "In a Twitter post, de Blasio added.
According to local media, De Blasio will run with state Senators Brad Hoylman and Simcha Felder, as well as assembly members Yuh-Line Niou, Robert Carroll, and Jo Anne Simon, in the Democratic primary on Aug. 23.

In his final year in office, De Blasio's popularity dwindled, with only 37% of city residents approving of his job performance in a June 2021 poll conducted by NY1/Ppsos.

New York's new congressional redistricting map is set to be finalized by a state court on Friday. According to political commentators, the new layout may make it tough for Democrats to maintain their 19-seat majority.

It may also lead to some awkward Democratic pairings. Jerrold Nadler and Carolyn Maloney, two long-serving Democratic representatives in Manhattan, saw their districts merged into a single seat, perhaps dragging them into a primary fight.
