Angela Bassett has always been noted for her elegance, and now she gets an honorary degree from Old Dominion University. Bassett, 63, announced the news on social media on Saturday (May 7), tweeting a photo of herself in her graduation gown and clutching her diploma in a frame. "How's it going, everyone?" She penned an essay. "I'm overjoyed and honored to be awarded an honorary doctorate from @olddominionu today!" The importance of education cannot be overstated!"During her speech, Bassett, who was also the keynote speaker at Old Dominion's 2022 commencement ceremony, provided some words of wisdom, encouraging the graduates to draw inspiration from their school mascot, the lion, in their future endeavors."Many of you have proudly looked at the monarch—a royal crown on a lion's head—as a compliment to your school's rich heritage, strength, pride, fearlessness, and monarchy," the Academy Award nominee addressed to the gathering. "And owing to a film called Black Panther, I guess I know a little bit about royalty… well, fictitious royalty at least," she concluded.
Angela Bassett has received an honorary doctorate from a university for the third time. Her first honorary doctorate came from her alma school, Yale University, in 2018, and her second came from Morehouse College in 2019.
