It's been nearly a month since the 2022 Academy Awards, and the fallout from Will Smith's Best Actor win slapping comedian Chris Rock during the broadcast continues. Smith apologized to the Academy and Rock in recent weeks, was barred from Academy events for the next decade, and several of his projects have been paused. Recently, the slap was addressed on the first episode of the fifth season of Jada Pinkett Smith's Red Table Talk, and the statement details how the Smith family is privately dealing with the incident. The fifth season premiere features an interview with artist, singer, and actress Janelle Monáe, who discussed her "hidden struggles" with Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris. Before we could pull up a chair at the eponymous red table, Pinkett Smith issued a few words that were unambiguously in reference to the 2022 Academy Awards and the subsequent fallout. "In light of recent events, the Smith family has been concentrating on profound healing," the statement began."When the time is right, we will share some of our healing discoveries at the table. Until then, the table will continue to welcome powerful, inspiring, and healing testimonies like that of our incredible first guest. "We appreciate your company," the statement concluded, before Pinkett Smith signed off with her given name, "Jada."

Given how closely the Smith family has been scrutinized over the last few weeks, it's understandable that they'd prefer to focus on these conversations and address what occurred in private. Rather than responding immediately, they likely gained more space and freedom to reflect by privately processing the previous few weeks. When the family decides to sit down and have this conversation, we're confident that all eyes will be drawn back to the red table.
