Ukraine's government published additional drone footage on Wednesday showing abandoned Russian military posts in the Exclusion Zone near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which is highly radioactively contaminated.
In a video shot by the Ukrainian military and shared on Telegram by Energoatom, Ukraine's state-owned nuclear power plant operator, vacant pits and trenches of abandoned military defences can be seen in an area known as the Red Forest.
Tank tracks and badly disturbed ground may also be observed in the Forest, which is considered the most toxic part of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and is off limits to anyone who does not work there or has special clearance.
Even nuclear plant staff are not permitted to enter the region since it is deemed extremely polluted and toxic.
Energoatom stated on Friday that it was unclear what Russian troops were doing in the Red Forest and that they could have been exposed to considerable amounts of radiation while digging or entrenching there. The troops who were not wearing anti-radiation protective equipment could have inhaled thick radioactive dust kicked up by heavy Russian vehicles, plant workers said at the time.
In late February, Russian troops took control of Chernobyl, the world's worst nuclear disaster. The plant is now under the control of Ukrainian authorities after Russian troops announced their intention to leave on Thursday and handed over control to Ukrainian personnel.
According to Reuters, the Red Forest got its name after dozens of square kilometers of pine trees turned red as a result of the 1986 explosion.
