Denzel Washington has spoken out about his Oscar night encounter with Will Smith and what transpired after Smith smacked Chris Rock on the stage.

On Saturday, Washington attended Bishop T.D. Jakes' leadership summit and spoke as a guest. Washington was asked about the notorious slap and what happened afterward during the two-hour talk on faith and his award-winning acting career.

"Well, there's a saying that when the devil ignores you, you know you're doing something wrong," Washington remarked in a video released on Jakes' verified Twitter account of the encounter.

"'Oh, no, don't bother him; he's my favorite,' says the devil. 'Do not annoy him,' says the narrator. When the devil attacks you, it's possible that it's because you're attempting to do the right thing. And the devil took advantage of that situation that night for whatever reason."Smith came up to the stage at the Academy Awards and smacked Chris Rock, who was presenting at the time, for making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head.
Smith received his first Academy Award shortly after the incident and apologized to the Academy and others."At your brightest moment, be wary," Smith warned during his victory speech, referring to a piece of advice he received from colleague nominee Washington before his win: "That's when the devil comes for you."
During Saturday's talk, Washington revealed that he prayed with Smith after the incident, along with actor and producer Tyler Perry.
"Fortunately, there were people there," Washington told Jakes, "not just me, but others in the gap." "Tyler Perry rushed over there with me right away."

After the incident, Washington refused to say what the three men discussed or prayed about.

"Who are we to pass judgment on?" says the narrator. The question came from Washington. "I don't know all the details, but I do know that prayer was the only way out."

In an Instagram statement on Monday, Smith apologized for his behavior, calling it "inappropriate and inexcusable."
