Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska, declared her candidacy for Congress on Friday, hoping to fill the lone US House seat left vacant by the death of longtime Representative Don Young.
Palin, a conservative firebrand who helped stoke the anti-establishment sentiment that has engulfed the GOP since she ran alongside the late Sen. John McCain years ago, said in a statement that she planned to "honor" the nearly five decades Young served in Congress by "offering myself up in the name of service to the state he loved and fought for."
She declared, "America is at a crossroads." "I knew I had to step up and join the fight after witnessing the extreme left wreck the country."Palin joins a crowded field of contenders to follow Young, the long-serving Alaska congressman who died last month at the age of 88. She enters the campaign as a household name in the state, despite the fact that she hasn't run for office in years.
A special primary will be held on June 11 and a special general election will be held on August 16, the same day as the statewide primary in Alaska. The elections will be the first to adopt the new election system in the state, in which all candidates run on a single ballot in the primary and the top four candidates progress to the general election. Palin resigned as governor of Alaska in 2009, shortly after she and McCain were defeated by then-Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden, citing the pressure and financial constraints that came with a slew of ethical allegations. Palin has remained a Republican mainstay since then.Regularly appearing at big gatherings of Republican activists to slam Democrats, he has made a name for himself on the convention circuit. She's also been a sought-after endorser for various Republican candidates, notably Donald Trump, who ran for President in 2016 and won.
In recent media appearances, Palin has hinted at a prospective presidential run."Everything has its time and season, and if this season is one where I need a more official platform, then absolutely, I'm going to put my hat in the ring because we need individuals with cojones," she told Fox. "People like Donald Trump, who have nothing to lose, and people like me, are what we need."
