"What do you say to those of them who may question that they may one day accomplish the same amazing heights that you have?" Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla asked Ketanji Brown Jackson on behalf of young people in the country.
Jackson talked about how she tries to speak to young people on a regular basis and then reflected on how she overcame obstacles to get where she is now.
"I'm grateful for the chance to speak with teenagers." It's really much appreciated. She explained, "I do it a lot for the reasons you mentioned." "I aim to encourage people to attempt to follow this road because I care about this country, the law, and I believe it is critical that we all invest in our future." And the youth are, so I want them to know that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
Jackson discussed her visit to Harvard University with her high school debate coach, as well as her subsequent enrollment at the university. She admitted that she didn't know much about the school or its culture at first because she came from a very different background than the majority of her classmates.
"It was a challenging situation." "It was unlike anything I'd ever experienced; there were many students there who were prep school students, like my husband, who knew all there was to know about Harvard, and that was not me," Jackson explained. She went on to say that during her first semester, she started to feel homesick and wondered if she belonged at the school until a stranger gave her advice while walking around Harvard Yard.
"I was walking through the yard in the dark and a Black woman I didn't know was passing me on the sidewalk and she looked at me and I suppose she knew how I was feeling because she bent over and said 'Persevere,'" she explained.
Jackson stated that she would advise young Americans who are watching the hearing to "persist."
