While Ukrainian forces claim to have retaken a town west of Kyiv, the mayor of a city east of the capital is urging inhabitants to flee.
"At this time, there is no pressing reason to visit the city. Around the region, fighting is already happening. I'm appealing to the general public to be wise and evacuate the city if at all possible "In a video statement released to Facebook, Boryspil mayor Volodymyr Borysenko said.
Borysenko stated that authorities would assist in the evacuation of people who did not have access to their own vehicles, and that transfers to the west of Ukraine were virtually daily.
"As experience has shown, the fewer citizens in a city where action is taking place, the easier it is for (Ukraine's) military forces to operate," the mayor explained.
At least 10 million people have fled their homes as a result of Russia's invasion, which began nearly four weeks ago, according to the United Nations.
That number represents over a quarter of the country's population, which was estimated by the World Bank to be 44 million in 2020.The majority of individuals who have fled their homes have been internally displaced since the war began on February 24 — 6.48 million as of March 16, according to numbers released by the International Organization for Migration on Friday.
